Partial Closure of Tramway Bridge Due to Structural Concerns

The Shire of Carnarvon has announced the partial closure of the Tramway Bridge, effective immediately, due to
structural concerns. This decision follows routine assessments which idenitified potential safety risks associated
with the current condition.
The Tramway Historical Bridge, a major part of Carnarvon's heritage, holds significant importance for both the local
community and visitors to the region. As part of ongoing structural reviews, works were originally scheduled
for April, May, and June 2025. However, due to the extent of deterioration, the Shire has made the difficult
decision to prioritise public safety by restricting access to the western side of the bridge.
Built in 1899, the Tramway Bridge served the community until 1984 as a vital connection to the One Mile Jetty.
Initially a key route for major imports and exports before the advancement of road transport and the cessation of port
facilities, the bridge now stands as a poignant reminder of its role in Carnarvon's history over the past 125 years. The
Shire is committed to restoring this historic structure for the enjoyment of current and future generations.
The Shire is actively evaluating the extent of the structural issues and planning restoration options.
Community members are encouraged to stay updated via official channels regarding the bridge's status and
upcoming developments.
