We’re thrilled to announce that the Portraits of Yinggarda Elders collection will be on loan from the Shire of Carnarvon and exhibited at Gwoonwardu Mia from Monday 11 November to Friday 22 November 2024.
This exhibition opens in conjunction with Seniors Week 2024, a perfect time to celebrate our cherished elders! Join us on Monday 11 November from 10am as we embark on a captivating cultural walk and tour through Gwoonwardu Mia.
Engage with passionate story tellers who bring the past to life, sharing tales of generations gone by, followed by a lovely morning tea.
The Portraits of Yinggarda Elders artworks are the result of a collaborative effort involving Tracey Tonga from the Yinggarda Aboriginal Corporation, Cheryl Moncrieff, our Aboriginal Development Officer, and award-winning local artist Gosia Taylor from G Stop. This initiative highlights the strength of community collaboration, showcasing the stories and cultural heritage of five remarkable Yinggarda Elders.
Guided by Gosia, local artists captured the essence of these elders, bringing their narratives to life. This project, developed in partnership with Real Futures and the Shire of Carnarvon, took shape at our new Community Art Hub - a true testament to inclusivity and respect. Aligned with the 2024 Reconciliation Week theme, Now More Than Ever, this collection embodies the spirit of reconciliation and underscores the importance of preserving and sharing the narratives of our Yinggarda Elders.
The Shire of Carnarvon is dedicated to growing this collection as a continuing celebration of our seniors and their invaluable contributions. Don’t miss the chance to view these powerful artworks in person at Gwoonwardu Mia, along with other incredible pieces on display!
