The Shire of Carnarvon is proud to announce that it has successfully secured $3.357 million from Lotterywest. This grant, combined with a Shire co-contribution of $554,000, and additional funding contributions of $1.049 million from other partner agencies, will be dedicated to the implementation of Phase One of the Carnarvon Activation Plan. The Plan, which was endorsed by Council at the Ordinary Council meeting in December 2023 provides a strategic vision to invigorate Carnarvon's community spaces and enhance visitor experiences.
This generous funding support signifies a momentous leap forward in delivering the Shire's Activation Plan and the Shire is now poised to kickstart a series of pivotal projects. Among these projects is the transformation of Van Dongen Park into a vibrant destination for our community to enjoy and which will attract visitors from near and far. Another project is the introduction of the Tramway Walk Trail which promises to seamlessly connect Carnarvon’s Heritage Precinct with the heart of our town via an interesting interpretive walk.
Reinstating the heritage Whitlock Island Train Station is another priority under this funding program which we know will resonate with our community.
Phase One is scheduled to be delivered over two years, commencing in mid-2024.
The Shire has conducted extensive stakeholder engagement in developing the Plan. The engagement has included two community workshops, which saw participation from 35 dedicated community members and the Shire offers our sincere thanks to those members of the community who so generously shared their time and great ideas.
Phase One of the Activation Plan is the inaugural step towards a series of eight interconnected projects, to activate the town centre. Formal support from key stakeholders including the Gascoyne Development Commission, Tourism WA, WA Police, and Yinggarda Aboriginal Corporation highlights the collaborative effort driving the plan's success.
Shire President Eddie Smith expressed his gratitude, stating, “The successful funding application marks a significant milestone in the realisation of the Activation Plan. With Lotterywest’s generous support, we will grow and enhance our community in more ways than one. As a Shire, we are dedicated to providing spaces for our community to enjoy and connect with one another.”
Looking ahead, the Shire remains committed to ensuring continued public and stakeholder involvement throughout the project's final design stages, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive community development.
