The Shire of Carnarvon received funding from FRP Capital (Carnarvon Central) and Rio Tinto to support the Shire in delivering the Carnarvon Central Shopping Precinct Mural.
The Shire is seeking expressions of interest from local artist/s to submit their concepts which align with the theme of: Connection to Country
The Corner of Robinson Street and Olivia Terrace is a key focal point on entry to the Carnarvon CBD. Already acknowledged by the Welcome Sticks centred in the roundabout, the Shire is keen to see the aesthetic improve to create a feeling of warmth and interest for visitors and the community. The theme ‘Connection to Country’ acknowledges our vast landscapes, rugged coastline, and dark night skies. It is a nod to our Traditional owners, multiculturalism and the opportunities that arise from being part of a remote community.
Artwork concept:
The key themes that could potentially be included in the artwork are:
- Flora and Fauna
- Landscape
- History and heritage
- Ceremonial
- Family and community
The space being considered for the artwork is a fibre cement finish that measures 32-metre in length and 2-metre in height. The proposed artwork concept will be negotiated with the artist to ensure it is appropriately positioned in the space for visibility and maximum impact, noting that it is not an essential requirement that the whole space is filled.
The artwork may result in an additional agreement to be used on promotional material developed as part of the project with ongoing conversations and agreement between the Shire and the artist/s.
Eligibility:
The opportunity is open to all artists. Individual works by an artist; or works that are a collaboration between artists; will be considered.
Selection process:
In the event that multiple submissions be received, a panel will be convened to assess the submissions against the requirements of this activity. The panel will consist of an elected member of Council, Andrea Selvey, Shire CEO, Stephanie Leca, Manager Community & Cultural Development.
Funding:
The successful applicant/s will receive $17,500 (ex GST if applicable).
Submitting an EOI:
Applicants can submit concept designs on A3-sized paper or as an email attachment. The design should accompany a supporting statement/story describing the artwork linking to the theme: Connection to Country
An application form will need to be completed with the submission of works.
