The Shire of Carnarvon is proud to announce that it has been awarded $5300 from the National Road Safety Commission and RAC Community Grants program to support various initiatives promoting road safety and raising awareness within the local community.
As part of the initiative, the Shire of Carnarvon will be utilising installed lights at the Civic Centre to light up the building yellow, which is the colour for road safety awareness. This will serve as a reminder to the community to drive safely and responsibly while on the road.
In collaboration with Carnarvon Community College and St Mary’s Star of the Sea, the Shire presented a Crash Simulation event. This unique experience involved students from years 10 to 12, allowing them to witness a simulated crash scenario and understand the potential consequences of unsafe driving practices. By involving young drivers and fostering their understanding of road safety, the Shire hopes to encourage responsible habits that will reduce road accidents.
As part of its ongoing commitment to promoting driver awareness, the Shire of Carnarvon supports the Gascoyne Roadwise Committee, who hosted a Driver Reviver event on Thursday 18 and Friday, 19 May. This initiative aims to combat driver fatigue and encourage motorists to take regular breaks during long journeys. The event is hosted on-site at a North West Coastal Highway rest area, where drivers can enjoy complimentary refreshments and engage in road safety discussions.
Additionally, the funding has enabled the Shire to produce 250 keep cups carrying an important message: "Coffee is not a substitute for Sleep." These cups will be distributed at the Markets on Saturday, 20 May, allowing community members to enjoy their favourite beverages while being reminded of the significance of adequate rest for safe driving. By promoting this message, the Shire hopes to raise awareness about the dangers of driving while fatigued and the importance of prioritising sufficient sleep.
The Shire of Carnarvon is committed to promoting road safety and reducing the number of accidents on the road. By partnering with the community and other organisations, the Shire hopes to create a safer and more responsible driving culture.
