Shire of Carnarvon Announces Nominations for Regional Airports Development Scheme 2025-2027 Projects

The Shire of Carnarvon is pleased to announce that nominations for the upcoming Regional Airports Development Scheme 2025-2027 funding round are now open. The Regional Airports Development Scheme, an ongoing funding program offered by the Western Australia Department of Transport, has previously supported the Shire in completing various upgrades to both Carnarvon Airport and Coral Bay Airstrip.

In anticipation of the latest Regional Airports Development Scheme program guidelines, which have yet to be issued, it is noted that past funding rounds typically provided up to 50% of project funding. Additionally, the Federal Regional Airport Upgrade Program has, in some cases, been used in conjunction with Regional Airports Development Scheme funding to reduce the Shire's co-contribution to one-third of the total project cost. Applications for the next Regional Airport Upgrade Program funding round are expected to be released in late 2024 or early 2025.

The Shire has identified three priority projects for this next Regional Airports Development Scheme funding round:

  1. Northern Apron Reconstruction - Carnarvon Airport
  2. Southern Apron Rejuvenation Seal - Carnarvon Airport
  3. Pavement Reshaping and Stabilisation - Coral Bay Airstrip

These projects are scheduled for completion in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 financial years.

If the Carnarvon Airport applications are successful, the Shire intends to include the Northern Apron and Southern Apron works in the procurement process for the Q400 upgrade works. This strategy aims to maximise opportunities for economies of scale and mobilisation cost savings, with these elements being included as provisional items to separate them from the Q400 upgrade funding.

For the Coral Bay Airstrip, should the application be successful, routine maintenance grading will be required to maintain the airstrip shape until the stabilisation work is completed in the 2026/2027 financial year.

The success of these applications will be pivotal and will be considered in their respective financial years.
