The Shire of Carnarvon, in partnership with the Gascoyne Arts Society, is proud to announce the winners of the 2024 Gascoyne Art Awards. This year’s awards saw an impressive turnout, with more than 80 entries across seven categories, showcasing the extraordinary talent of artists from the Gascoyne region and beyond.
The theme for the landscape and seascape categories was inspired by the
breathtaking beauty of the Gascoyne, and artists responded with a diverse array of interpretations, capturing the region's unique character and essence.
The winners in each category are:
Gascoyne Seascapes: Tamika Hogan with Slow Living on Desert Time
Gascoyne Landscapes: Gregory Chestler with School Holidays in Cape Range
Abstract Art: Jillian O’Brien with Comforter
Still Life: Sadie James with Outback Rains & Reigns
3D Art: Sabrina Dowling Giudici with Blowholes Dreaming
Human Form: Jenna Pickering with Turn the Lights On
Gascoyne Indigenous Artist: Karla Tittums with Gajalbu Nesting
The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Overall Winner, who received the $8,000 cash prize for the acquisitive piece that will become a permanent part of the Shire of Carnarvon's Art Collection. This prestigious award went to Gosia Taylor for her captivating Human Form entry, Marg. The judging panel, consisting of Ricky Arnold, Director of
ART ON THE MOVE, and Cassandra Cooper, Arts and Culture Coordinator at the
City of Cockburn, carefully selected the winners through an anonymous judging process. Each piece was evaluated solely on its artistic merit, with the artists' identities unknown to the judges.
The evaluation criteria for the awards included Interpretation of Theme/Concept (30%), Design and Composition (40%), and Artistic Merit (30%), ensuring a thorough and fair assessment of all entries.
Shire President Eddie Smith expressed his admiration for the exceptional quality of work on display.
"The Gascoyne Art Awards continue to highlight the incredible talent within our region and across Western Australia. The diversity and creativity showcased in this year’s entries are a testament to the vibrant artistic community we have here. I would like to congratulate all the winners and participants for their outstanding contributions."
The Gascoyne Art Awards exhibition is open to the public until 13 September 2024, at the Shire of Carnarvon's Library & Art Gallery on Egan Street. The community is invited to visit the exhibition and cast their vote for the 'People’s Choice' award, which will be presented during the closing night on 13 September 2024.
