Another Successful Year of Junior Council!
Local Young Leaders Learning About Local Government
A partnership between the Shire of Carnarvon, Carnarvon Senior Highschool, and St Mary's Secondary School has resulted in the ongoing development of a Junior Council Program.
The young people will have the opportunity to learn about Local Government decision making processes, by getting 'right amongst it', through the practice of presenting issues for discussion which are debated and voted upon. Plenty of fun is had with the young people taking on important roles such as;
- Junior Shire President
- Junior Deputy Shire President
- Junior minute taker
- Junior Councillors
Shire president, Dudley Maslen, will meet and share some of his personal experiences with the group in Local Government, and provide insight into his daily role. Dudley explains, "the committment by the Community Services Team to Junior Council was extremely successful and we look forward to meeting up with some new and old faces in 2009". The young people, whilst gaining experience in a formal setting, provide the Shire of Carnarvon's Community Services team with valuable insights into how 'things' are for our next generation in Carnarvon.
Volunteers
Volunteering is for everyone - can you volunteer today?
In a partnership between Volunteering WA and community groups and organisations in Carnarvon, the shire encourages people of all ages and walks of life to step up to the challenge and become a volunteer. Volunteering is a position in the community whereby YOU decide how much you do and when you do it - the most flexible job in the world! The only requirement is commitment, and how much of that you give is up to the individual.
There are many opportunities within the region to share your skills, time, or value-add to what you already know. If you are interested in volunteering, or would like to know more, contact the Community Development Officer on 9941 0000 or email: ce.officer@carnarvon.wa.gov.au
